Alex Lasry, CEO of the NYNJ Host Committee for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, said the region is prepared for the upcoming tournament.
Effective transportation is critical for the event because MetLife Stadium has banned personal vehicle parking during matches [5]. With thousands of fans expected to descend on East Rutherford, New Jersey, the committee must ensure the transit network can handle the surge without creating gridlock.
Lasry said the region is ready and that contingency plans are in place for any transportation issues that arise. To mitigate the parking ban, the committee is promoting rail travel and shuttle services to move spectators to the venue [1, 2].
However, the cost of transit has become a point of contention. Reports on NJ Transit ticket prices for World Cup matches vary, with some sources citing a cost of $150 [3], while others report a price of $98 [4]. Despite the availability of these tickets, data suggests that less than six percent of the $98 tickets have been sold [4].
Additional financial constraints have been reported, with some sources stating only $40,000 is available per match for ticket sales [3]. These high costs and low sales figures have drawn criticism from government officials.
Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said FIFA should cover the full rail cost for New Yorkers attending the World Cup [6].
The committee continues to emphasize that the infrastructure is capable of supporting the event, provided fans utilize the designated shuttle and rail options rather than attempting to drive to the stadium [2].
“The region is ready for the tournament and we have contingency plans in place”
The tension between the Host Committee's readiness claims and the actual transit costs highlights a potential accessibility gap for fans. By banning personal vehicles and implementing high-cost transit tickets, the organizers are prioritizing traffic flow over affordability, which may lead to further political pressure on FIFA to subsidize transportation to avoid a public relations crisis during the tournament.
