Union Minister Nitin Gadkari triggered the breakthrough blast of the Zojila Tunnel on June 9, 2026 [1], marking a major construction milestone.

This breakthrough is critical because it establishes a permanent, all-weather link between the Kashmir valley and Ladakh. For decades, the Zojila Pass has been subject to seasonal closures due to heavy snowfall, isolating the region and disrupting essential supply lines.

The tunnel spans 13.153 km [2] and is designed as a single-tube bi-directional road. It connects Baltal in Sonamarg, Kashmir, with Minamarg in Drass-Kargil, Ladakh [3]. Situated at an altitude of approximately 11,578 feet [4], the project is one of the world's longest high-altitude single-tube road tunnels [5].

"We are on the brink of completing a historic project that will transform connectivity in the region," Gadkari said [6].

The project aims to eliminate the seasonal dependence on the treacherous Zojila Pass. This will ensure that civilian transport and military logistics can move without interruption throughout the year. The construction process has been described as one of the most challenging infrastructure projects in the Himalayas due to the extreme terrain and weather.

"The breakthrough marks a major milestone in India's infrastructure journey and will enable year-round movement for civilians and the armed forces," the Project Director for the Zojila Tunnel said [7].

Local leadership has emphasized the economic and security implications of the project. The Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir said the tunnel will bring all-weather road connectivity to the people, and boost tourism and defense logistics [8].

The completion of the main tunnel section allows the project team to move toward the final stages of finishing and commissioning. This infrastructure is expected to significantly reduce travel time and increase the safety of commuters and soldiers operating in the high-altitude border regions.

"We are on the brink of completing a historic project that will transform connectivity in the region,"

The Zojila Tunnel breakthrough reduces India's strategic vulnerability in the Ladakh region by ensuring that the military can move troops and equipment regardless of winter weather. Beyond defense, the tunnel transforms the local economy by enabling year-round tourism and trade, removing the seasonal blockade that historically hindered the development of the Drass and Kargil sectors.
