Bandai Co., Ltd. is voluntarily recalling approximately 244,800 [1] "Star Kirby C-light" toy units sold nationwide across Japan.

The recall follows the discovery of a technical defect that could pose a safety risk to children. Because the toys are sold in supermarkets and other retail outlets, the widespread distribution necessitates a rapid removal of the product from consumer homes.

The company said the recall on July 2, 2026 [4]. According to the manufacturer, the button batteries inside the toys were found to expand, which lifts the battery cover. This failure creates a risk that the battery could rupture or leak liquid, a hazard that prompted the safety-first measure.

These specific toys only recently entered the market, with sales beginning on June 22, 2026 [3]. Despite the short window of availability, the company had already received 21 consumer inquiries regarding the issue by July 1, 2026 [2].

Bandai is coordinating the recall across various retail channels. The company said it is working to ensure all affected units are recovered to prevent potential injuries associated with battery leakage. No injuries have been reported in connection with the swelling batteries as of the announcement date.

Bandai is voluntarily recalling approximately 244,800 "Star Kirby C-light" toy units.

This recall highlights the ongoing safety challenges associated with small button batteries in children's toys. Because these batteries can be dangerous if ingested or if they leak caustic chemicals, Japanese regulators and manufacturers maintain a low threshold for triggering recalls when structural failures, such as a lifting battery lid, are detected.
