Former U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton said the Iran nuclear deal represents a real defeat for the United States [1].
Bolton's critique suggests that the agreement creates strategic vulnerabilities for the U.S. by providing Iran with financial resources, and diplomatic leverage during a period of political volatility.
Speaking in a Bloomberg Television interview on the program "Balance of Power: Evening Edition," Bolton said the deal is a self-inflicted wound [1]. He said that the current framework gives Iran enormous leverage, which he attributed to the behavior of Donald Trump [1, 2].
Bolton warned that the financial implications of the deal are particularly dangerous. He said, "Iran will use oil funds to rebuild their war capabilities" [1].
According to Bolton, the Iranian leadership is aware of the internal U.S. political climate regarding the agreement. He said that the Iranians can see Trump wants out of the deal because he is broadcasting it almost every day [2].
Bolton said the situation is a trap of Trump's own making [1, 2]. He said, "This is a self-inflicted wound if ever there was one" [1].
“"This is a self-inflicted wound if ever there was one."”
Bolton's assessment highlights a fundamental tension in U.S. foreign policy regarding the balance between diplomatic containment and economic sanctions. By arguing that oil revenues enable military rebuilding, Bolton suggests that any deal allowing Iran to access global markets inherently undermines the primary goal of preventing the country from expanding its regional military influence.
