Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that the Delhi government will issue 200,000 new ration cards this year [1].
The initiative aims to resolve a long-standing shortage of cards for the city's most vulnerable residents. By expanding access to subsidized food grains, the government seeks to reduce food insecurity among poor and needy populations who have lacked documentation for many years.
Gupta said this during a program in the North West Delhi district [1]. The event marked the first anniversary of the current Delhi government, which took office in 2024 [1].
"We are going to issue two lakh ration cards this year," Gupta said [1].
Gupta said that the move aligns with the 'Antyodaya' vision of Prime Minister Modi [1]. This vision emphasizes the upliftment of the poorest of the poor to ensure that government benefits reach the very end of the social ladder.
The distribution of these cards is expected to streamline the delivery of essential commodities. For many residents in the North West district and across Delhi, the lack of a ration card has served as a primary barrier to accessing state-supported nutrition programs.
Government officials said the rollout is intended to address systemic gaps that have left thousands of eligible families without a safety net. The expansion represents a significant increase in the city's social welfare outreach for the current fiscal cycle [1].
“"We are going to issue two lakh ration cards this year,"”
The issuance of 200,000 new ration cards indicates a shift toward aggressive expansion of the social safety net in Delhi. By explicitly linking the policy to the 'Antyodaya' vision, the Delhi government is aligning its local welfare goals with national poverty alleviation frameworks to ensure the poorest citizens receive basic food security.
