Medical staff at Ruteng Hospital in Indonesia have moved patients into temporary tents after a magnitude-7.7 earthquake [1] damaged the facility.
The evacuation highlights the vulnerability of critical healthcare infrastructure in seismic zones, where the loss of a primary hospital can leave thousands without stable medical care.
The earthquake struck the East Nusa Tenggara province on Feb. 3, 2024 [1]. By the following day, the structural damage to the hospital was severe enough to make the building unsafe for occupants. This forced the administration to establish a makeshift ward in the hospital car park to continue treating those in need.
Among those receiving care in the outdoor tents are elderly patients and a two-month-old baby. Medical personnel are operating under extreme conditions, facing both intense heat and cold while dealing with significant equipment shortages caused by the disaster.
Rescue teams continued to search the surrounding areas for survivors after the initial tremors. Officials said that four additional bodies were recovered [1] by these teams during the search operations.
The temporary setup lacks the sterile environment and specialized tools found in a traditional clinical setting. Staff members are working to manage patient needs with limited resources while the main facility remains unusable.
Ruteng remains a focal point for recovery efforts in the province. The shift to outdoor care was necessary to prevent further casualties from potential building collapses as aftershocks continued to threaten the region.
