Children living in London's Ultra Low Emission Zone have seen marked improvements in lung growth and capacity, according to a new study.

The findings suggest that reducing traffic-related air pollution can directly accelerate respiratory recovery in children, potentially reversing the effects of urban smog.

Researchers from Queen Mary University of London analyzed the health of more than 3,400 children [1]. The study found that children's lung capacity caught up with peers living in less-polluted areas [2]. This improvement followed the introduction of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in 2019 [3].

"We were stunned by how quickly children's lungs recovered once the air quality improved," a lead researcher from Queen Mary University of London said.

Mayor Sadiq Khan praised the results of the research. "This research proves we were right to introduce the Ultra Low Emission Zone," Khan said.

The study highlights a significant link between city-wide emissions policies and immediate biological outcomes for youth. By lowering the concentration of pollutants, the city provided an environment where respiratory development could normalize, effectively closing the gap between urban and rural health markers [2].
