Government Secondary School Zing and Family Support Programme Katsina won the Savannah Conference regional titles of the Milo Basketball Championship this week.

The victories secure both teams a place in the Central Region Finals, marking a critical step toward the national championship for the student-athletes.

The regional finals took place at the Sanni Abacha Indoor Sports Hall in Kano. The event served as the qualifying stage for the Savannah Conference, where teams competed for the right to advance in the tournament bracket.

This competition is part of the 26th [1] edition of the Milo Basketball Championship. The tournament is designed to identify and promote young basketball talent across Nigeria by pitting regional winners against one another in a tiered elimination format.

Government Secondary School Zing, representing Taraba State, and Family Support Programme Katsina, representing Katsina State, emerged as the top teams from their respective categories in the Savannah Conference. Their performance in Kano ensures they move forward to face other regional champions in the Central Region Finals.

Organizers use these regional milestones to gauge the level of competition before the final stages of the championship. The transition from the Savannah Conference to the Central Region Finals represents a narrowing of the field as the tournament approaches its conclusion.

The advancement of teams from Taraba and Katsina states highlights the geographic spread of competitive youth basketball in Nigeria. By qualifying for the Central Region Finals, these programs move from local dominance to a higher tier of national competition, which often serves as a primary scouting ground for academic scholarships and professional development in the sport.
