Prime Minister Narendra Modi (BJP) became India’s longest-serving elected prime minister in May 2026, surpassing the tenure of Jawaharlal Nehru [1].
The milestone has reignited an ideological battle between India's two largest political parties. While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) uses the record to bolster Modi's legacy, the Indian National Congress argues that length of tenure is an irrelevant metric compared to a leader's actual contribution to the nation [1], [4].
Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition and a member of the Congress party, used the occasion to attack the government's economic record. During remarks made in Raebareli, Gandhi focused on the struggles of ordinary citizens rather than the prime minister's tenure [3].
"The Prime Minister is busy with a 'melody' while the country suffers from soaring inflation and fuel prices," Gandhi said [1].
The Congress party has challenged the BJP's narrative by shifting the focus toward unemployment, and the rising cost of living. Kuldeep Rathore, a Congress MLA, said that the focus on years in office is a distraction from governance [4].
"A Prime Minister's legacy is about contribution, not the number of years in office," Rathore said [4].
Supporters of the current administration point to the reversal of several Nehru-era decisions as a sign of a new direction for India. These changes include shifts in the approach to the Indus Water Treaty, and the replacement of older planning bodies with the NITI Aayog [1].
However, some analysts suggest that the comparison between the two leaders is fundamentally flawed. Kanchan Gupta, a senior commentator, said that comparing Modi with Nehru is a political exercise that ignores the realities of partition-era refugee issues [5].
The BJP has responded to the remarks made by Gandhi in Raebareli, framing the opposition's criticism as an attempt to undermine a historic achievement [3].
“A Prime Minister's legacy is about contribution, not the number of years in office.”
This confrontation reflects a broader struggle over the definition of Indian statehood. By surpassing Nehru, Modi is not just breaking a record but is symbolically attempting to displace the foundational legacy of the Congress party. The opposition's pivot to inflation and unemployment is a strategic effort to move the public discourse from historical symbolism to immediate economic grievances.
