The Suzugawa route on the Shizuoka side of Mt. Fuji will open on July 1, 2026 [1].
This synchronization aligns the Shizuoka opening with the Yoshida route on the Yamanashi side. The change aims to prevent hikers from descending into the Shizuoka region before essential safety work, including snow removal and infrastructure repairs, is fully completed [2].
Mt. Fuji features four climbing routes, with one located in Yamanashi and three in Shizuoka [3]. Previously, the opening date for the Shizuoka routes was July 10, which was 10 days later than the Yamanashi opening [4]. Governor Suzuki said the decision was to unify the dates to July 1 [5].
Preparations are moving at a rapid pace to meet the earlier deadline. At the Nagata Mountain Lodge, located at the sixth station, staff are conducting critical equipment checks. Sato Akira, a lodge staff member, said, "I will now carry out the inspection of the generator" [6].
Beyond the timeline shift, officials have addressed longstanding infrastructure concerns. The move to open on July 1 comes as the prefecture resolves toilet facility issues along the Suzugawa route [2]. These improvements are intended to ensure the trail can support the influx of climbers safely and hygienically from the start of the season.
“The Suzugawa route on the Shizuoka side of Mt. Fuji will open on July 1, 2026”
The unification of opening dates between Shizuoka and Yamanashi prefectures reduces the risk of 'leakage' where climbers ascend via one prefecture's route but descend via another's before the latter is officially ready. By addressing toilet infrastructure and snow removal simultaneously, the region is attempting to standardize the climber experience and mitigate safety hazards caused by premature trail use.
