The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is launching a nationwide voter registration weekend on June 20 and 21, 2026 [1].

This drive is critical for ensuring that eligible South Africans can exercise their democratic rights by registering for the first time or updating their existing information. It allows citizens to verify their voting details to prevent discrepancies on election day.

Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo said the commission is ready for the event [2]. An IEC spokesperson said the agency is urging eligible South Africans to register to vote, update their registration details, and verify their voting information during the drive [4].

Registration will take place at 23,706 voting stations across the country [1]. These locations will operate from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. over the two-day period [3]. The commission has coordinated these sites to ensure broad geographic coverage for the population.

"We call on all eligible South Africans to take full advantage of the voter registration weekend to register," an IEC spokesperson said [4].

The process is designed to be accessible, with more than 23,700 registration stations available to the public [3]. The IEC said the weekend serves as a primary window for citizens to ensure their status is current before future electoral deadlines.

More than 23,700 registration stations will operate from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. over two days.

The scale of this registration drive, utilizing over 23,000 locations, underscores the IEC's effort to maximize voter turnout and database accuracy. By providing a dedicated weekend for registration and verification, the commission aims to reduce administrative hurdles that often lead to voter disenfranchisement during general elections.
