Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay responded Tuesday to warnings from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) regarding the inclusion of AIADMK rebels in his cabinet.
The dispute threatens the stability of the TVK-led alliance. If the CPI(M) withdraws its support, the government could face a crisis of legitimacy or a loss of its working majority in the assembly.
The tension began when CPI(M) state secretary P Shanmugam said that the party might reconsider its support for the government [1]. This warning followed reports that rebel members of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Dal (AIADMK) might be granted cabinet positions [2]. The CPI(M) raised these concerns because including such rebels could upset the coalition balance [3].
In response to the friction, Vijay said the rumors regarding the AIADMK rebels were dismissed [2]. He shifted focus toward his existing partners by offering invites to allies to participate in the government's formation [2].
This political maneuvering comes as Vijay works to solidify his power base. He previously said he had the support of 118 MLAs to form the government [4]. Maintaining this number is critical for the administration to function without constant deadlock.
Among the key partners in the coalition is the Congress party, which is currently the biggest ally of the TVK and holds five seats in the assembly [2]. The government must balance the demands of these ideological partners, and the temptation to absorb defectors from opposition parties to increase its numerical strength.
The administration's decision to junk the AIADMK cabinet buzz suggests a priority on coalition cohesion over the short-term gain of absorbing opposition rebels [2].
“The CPI(M) raised these concerns because including such rebels could upset the coalition balance.”
This conflict highlights the fragile nature of the TVK-led coalition, where ideological purity demanded by the CPI(M) clashes with the pragmatic desire to build a larger majority through opposition defectors. By siding with his allies over the AIADMK rebels, Vijay is signaling that the stability of his current partnership is more valuable than the numerical boost provided by political rebels.
