Thousands of candidates gathered at exam centres across Uttar Pradesh this week for the police constable recruitment exam.
The event highlights the extreme competition for government employment in the region, where a massive surge of applicants is vying for a limited number of secure positions.
According to reports, 723,000 aspirants appeared for the exam [4]. This represents a 75% attendance rate [3]. The Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board coordinated the process across 1,183 centres [5] located in 75 districts [6], including Meerut and Muzaffarnagar.
The scale of the recruitment drive follows a two-year hiatus in testing [7]. This gap contributed to a backlog of candidates, resulting in approximately 29 lakh applicants [1] competing for only 32,000 available seats [2].
The arrival of candidates created significant logistical challenges. At some locations, the arrival of trains carrying aspirants was described as a "battle" due to the sheer volume of people thronging the stations and exam centres.
Candidates traveled from across the state to reach the designated centers. The high ratio of applicants to available posts—roughly 90 people for every single opening—underscores the intensity of the competition for these roles.
“Over 723,000 aspirants appeared for the exam”
The massive turnout for the Uttar Pradesh Police recruitment exam reflects a broader systemic pressure in the Indian labor market, where government jobs are highly coveted for their stability and benefits. The two-year gap in recruitment created a bottleneck that amplified the competition, turning a standard civil service exam into a significant logistical and social event.
