Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he proposed a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the G7 summit in France.

The proposal represented an attempt to establish a direct diplomatic channel to end the war. Because the summit involved high-level international mediation, it provided a rare opportunity for the two leaders to engage in person.

The offer occurred during the G7 summit held in Bordeaux, France, from June 11 to 13, 2024 [1]. Zelenskyy sought to utilize the presence of other global leaders to facilitate a dialogue on peace.

"We sent a message expressing our willingness to meet with Putin during the G7 summit because Trump and Macron will be there," Zelenskyy said.

Despite the outreach, the effort did not result in a face-to-face encounter. Zelenskyy said that the Russian leadership was not prepared for such a discussion at that time.

"Russia was not ready to speak," Zelenskyy said.

While the direct meeting did not materialize, Zelenskyy said that the summit served other strategic purposes for Ukraine. He emphasized that the administration of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy continued to seek international cooperation to counter Russian aggression.

"We have secured key support from world leaders at the G7 summit," Zelenskyy said.

The G7 summit served as a venue for coordinating military and economic aid, even as the prospect of direct negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow remained distant. The absence of a Russian response to the meeting offer underscores the ongoing diplomatic deadlock between the two nations.

"Russia was not ready to speak."

The proposal highlights Zelenskyy's strategy of attempting to maintain a diplomatic opening while simultaneously strengthening military alliances. By offering a meeting in the presence of leaders like Macron and Trump, Ukraine aimed to place the burden of refusal on Russia, signaling to the international community that Kyiv is open to peace talks while Moscow remains resistant to direct diplomacy.
