Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant has urged Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla not to recognize any breakaway factions of the party in Parliament.
The request comes as the party seeks to prevent a formal split in the legislature. Maintaining party unity under the leadership of Uddhav Thackeray is critical for the group's standing in New Delhi.
Sawant's appeal to the Speaker is intended to block any group claiming to represent the Shiv Sena (UBT) if they are not aligned with the established leadership. This move aims to ensure that the party's official status, and parliamentary representation, remain intact despite internal pressures.
Reports accompanying the crisis suggest a high-stakes effort to maintain loyalty among legislators. Some reports indicate that 15 crore rupees [1] per MP was allegedly offered to support the Shiv Sena (UBT) faction.
The political maneuvering occurs within the Lok Sabha in New Delhi, where the recognition of a party faction by the Speaker can determine the legal and operational control of a party's name and symbol. Sawant said the Speaker should not recognize any group attempting to break away from the Thackeray-led organization.
The party is currently navigating a volatile period in Maharashtra politics, where party splits have previously led to significant shifts in state and national power dynamics. By appealing directly to the Speaker, the party hopes to preempt a legal or procedural challenge to its leadership structure.
“Arvind Sawant has urged Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla not to recognize any breakaway factions”
This request highlights the fragility of party coalitions in Indian politics, where the Speaker's decision on party recognition can effectively decide which faction retains legal legitimacy. The alleged financial offers suggest an intense struggle for loyalty, indicating that the party is fighting to prevent a repeat of previous splits that have reshaped Maharashtra's political landscape.
