The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is nearing a decisive victory in the Falta Assembly repoll in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district.
The result signals a potential shift in a traditional stronghold for the Trinamool Congress (TMC). A victory for the BJP in this region suggests a weakening of the TMC's grip on the local electorate following allegations of electoral irregularities that prompted the full repoll.
According to current counting data, the BJP holds a lead of more than 76,000 votes [1]. While some reports suggest the lead exceeds 100,000 votes, the verified count remains above the 76,000 mark [1].
Suvendu Adhikari of the BJP used the occasion to mock the TMC and its leader, Mamata Banerjee. Adhikari said the TMC suffered a setback in the neighboring Diamond Harbour area, where a TMC candidate withdrew from the race.
Banerjee responded to the political climate surrounding the elections. "It is a victory for the people," Banerjee said.
The repoll in Falta was ordered after claims of irregularities during the initial voting process. The BJP has sought to capitalize on this opportunity to make inroads into the South 24 Parganas district, an area that has historically favored the TMC.
“The BJP holds a lead of more than 76,000 votes”
This result represents a significant tactical win for the BJP in West Bengal. By securing a massive lead in the Falta repoll and exploiting the TMC's failures in Diamond Harbour, the BJP is demonstrating an ability to disrupt the TMC's regional dominance. The outcome may embolden the BJP to challenge more TMC strongholds in future contests.
