Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath led the groundbreaking ceremony for a new international cricket stadium and sports complex in Gorakhpur [1].
The project represents a significant expansion of sports infrastructure in the state, aimed at providing modern facilities for cricket and indoor games while creating development opportunities for local youth [1, 2].
The ceremony, which included land pujan and the laying of the foundation stone for Phase-1, took place following a memorandum of understanding signed on Feb. 19, 2026 [3]. This facility will be the fourth international cricket stadium in Uttar Pradesh [2].
The stadium is designed to accommodate approximately 30,000 spectators [1]. Construction is set to take place on a site spanning 46 acres [1]. In addition to the cricket grounds, the project includes an adjoining sports complex developed on 60 acres of land [1].
Funding for the project involves private sector participation. Lucdian Oil Corporation Limited (IOC) has pledged a financial contribution of ₹60 crore toward the stadium's development [3].
Officials said the integration of the stadium and the larger sports complex is intended to create a comprehensive hub for athletic training. The site will support both professional international matches and grassroots sports programs to encourage youth participation in various disciplines [1, 2].
“The stadium is designed to accommodate approximately 30,000 spectators.”
The establishment of this stadium signals a strategic effort by the Uttar Pradesh government to decentralize sports infrastructure away from major metropolitan hubs. By integrating a professional international venue with a broader 60-acre sports complex, the state is attempting to create a scalable model for youth athletic development and regional economic growth through sports tourism.
