Hurricane Lala struck Hawaii's Big Island this weekend, destroying bridges and washing away roads during a period of torrential rain.
The storm's impact isolated entire communities and crippled local infrastructure, complicating emergency response efforts and leaving thousands of residents without basic utilities.
Lala was a Category 1 tropical cyclone with winds reaching approximately 75 mph [1]. The storm passed within 35 miles of a direct hit on the island [2], bringing heavy rain from its outer bands that triggered widespread flooding.
