Idris Elba has launched Akuna Daily, a technology platform for creators, and announced plans to establish an African Odeon cinema chain.

These initiatives aim to build entertainment infrastructure across Africa and provide digital tools that empower African storytellers to enter the global economy.

Elba made the announcements during SXSW London in the United Kingdom to coincide with Africa Day on May 25, 2024 [1]. The actor-entrepreneur designed Akuna Daily to serve as a hub for digital content production and distribution. By focusing on the creator economy, the platform seeks to give African talent more direct control over their work and monetization.

"Akuna Daily will be the go-to platform for African storytellers and creators," Elba said [2].

Beyond the digital space, Elba is targeting the physical exhibition of film. He intends to create a cinema network modeled after the Odeon chain to improve the quality of movie-going experiences on the continent. This move addresses a gap in high-end cinema infrastructure in various African markets.

"We’re building an African Odeon cinema chain to bring world-class movie experiences to the continent," Elba said [2].

The timing of the launch was intentional, marking a day of celebration for the continent's heritage and future. Elba linked the business ventures to a broader goal of economic empowerment through the arts.

"I’m thrilled to celebrate Africa Day by launching something that puts African talent at the centre of the digital economy," Elba said [3].

"Akuna Daily will be the go-to platform for African storytellers and creators,"

This dual approach targets both the digital and physical distribution of media. By combining a creator-focused tech platform with a physical cinema chain, Elba is attempting to create a vertically integrated entertainment ecosystem that reduces reliance on Western distribution channels for African content.
