Astronauts Sophie Adenot and Anil Menon ended a spacewalk on Tuesday without installing a faulty external antenna on the International Space Station [1].
The failed installation delays critical repairs to the station's communication infrastructure, a setback for the crew's scheduled maintenance timeline.
Adenot, representing France, and Menon, representing the U.S., exited the station for an extravehicular activity (EVA) intended to replace a malfunctioning antenna [1]. The mission was scheduled to last six hours and 30 minutes [1]. However, the pair returned to the station after approximately six hours [2].
Nathalie Tinjod, an administrator for the European Space Agency, confirmed the mission did not go as intended. "The mission of Sophie Adenot and Anil Menon is not happening exactly as planned," Tinjod said [3].
While the astronauts spent the majority of the planned duration outside the station, the antenna was not installed during the outing [3]. Officials have not specified whether the failure was due to technical malfunctions with the hardware or time-related constraints encountered during the EVA [1].
Following the return to the airlock, Adenot reflected on the complex operation. "What a day," Adenot said [2].
