Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said the People’s Action Party (PAP) can continue to govern well if renewed with good people willing to serve.

This effort to attract diverse perspectives is intended to keep Singapore competitive on the global stage. By recruiting talent with varied experiences, the party aims to avoid intellectual stagnation and better reflect the needs of the population.

Wong said Saturday, July 4, 2026 [3], during the Young PAP 40 Festival [1]. The event marked the 40th anniversary of the party's youth wing [1]. During the festival, the government launched the Young PAP Academy and the YP 40 Under 40 Action Fellowship [1, 2].

Wong said the party is specifically seeking individuals with different views and ideas. "PAP doesn’t want everyone to think the same way; we seek people with different views, ideas," Wong said [2].

Addressing the appeal of the party to younger generations, Wong said that some youth are naturally drawn to the underdog. He said that while the PAP is an established party, the true competition for the nation exists outside its borders.

"The real competition is not within Singapore. The real competition is between Singapore and the rest of the world," Wong said. "In that arena, Singapore has been, and will always be, the underdog," he said [1].

He said the newly launched Young PAP Academy and the YP 40 Under 40 Action Fellowship are launchpads for the next generation of leaders [1].

"PAP doesn’t want everyone to think the same way; we seek people with different views, ideas."

The emphasis on 'renewal' and 'diverse views' suggests a strategic shift by the PAP to modernize its image and recruitment. By framing Singapore as a global underdog, Wong is attempting to pivot the narrative of political competition away from domestic opposition and toward national survival in a volatile global economy.
