The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party will form a coalition based on principle to lead the Tamil Nadu government, party leadership said.
This move follows the June 2026 legislative assembly elections, where the party led by actor-politician Vijay secured a significant presence in the house. The ability of TVK to stabilize a coalition will determine whether the state avoids the political volatility that often accompanies fragmented mandates.
TVK won 108 seats in the assembly [1]. Health minister K.G. Arunraj said the administration intends to complete a full five-year term in office. The party aims to use this stability to ensure that public health services improve, and to demonstrate a long-term ideological commitment to its allies.
Despite the party's position as the single largest entity, the path to the chief minister's office remains complex. Some reports suggest that while TVK is poised to lead, the goal of securing the chief ministership is still contested. These challenges are compounded by reports of internal instability, as some TVK legislators have reportedly threatened mass resignations.
Negotiations are currently focused on identifying partners who align with the party's core principles. TVK leadership said these alliances are necessary to prevent governmental instability and to provide a consistent governing framework for the state. The party continues to engage with other political factions to finalize the cabinet list and the date for the oath-swearing ceremony.
“TVK will form a coalition based on principle”
The emergence of TVK as the largest party with 108 seats disrupts the traditional dominance of established Dravidian parties in Tamil Nadu. However, the contradiction between the party's public pursuit of a stable five-year term and reports of internal threats of resignation suggests a fragile internal hierarchy. Vijay's transition from cinema to governance now depends on his ability to balance ideological purity with the pragmatic demands of coalition politics.
