U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor praised President Donald Trump’s endorsement of India’s voter-ID system and urged Congress to pass the SAVE America Act.
The push for nationwide identification requirements marks a significant effort by the administration to overhaul U.S. election laws by using a foreign democratic model as a precedent.
Gor shared his support for the initiative in a post on X and during interviews with Indian news outlets. He said Trump is correct in his assessment of the need for stricter identification at the polls.
To support his position, Gor highlighted the scale of the Indian electoral process. He said India’s last general election saw 646 million voters [1], every single one of whom was required to present a valid photo ID. In other statements, Gor said over 660 million people [2] voted with ID in that system, describing it as a model for the U.S.
The ambassador said the implementation of such a system is important for ensuring election integrity. He said the ability of India to manage a massive electorate with strict ID requirements demonstrates the feasibility of similar mandates in the United States.
The endorsement comes as the administration continues to advocate for the SAVE America Act. This legislation aims to implement stricter voter identification laws across the country to prevent fraud, and standardize the voting process.
Gor's comments link the diplomatic relationship between the U.S. and India to domestic policy goals. By citing the Indian model, the ambassador provides a specific example of a large-scale democracy utilizing the tools the administration seeks to adopt.
“"India’s voter ID system... is a model for the US."”
The use of India's electoral system as a justification for the SAVE America Act suggests the administration is seeking international validation for its domestic voting reforms. By framing voter ID as a standard in another major democracy, the administration aims to counter arguments that such requirements are overly restrictive or impractical for large populations.
