VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan suggested that the DMK and TVK could cooperate nationally to oppose the BJP despite remaining rivals in Tamil Nadu [1, 2].
This proposal signals a potential shift in the region's political strategy to consolidate opposition forces against the national ruling party. Such a move could reorganize power dynamics among Tamil Nadu's regional parties as they navigate state and national priorities.
Thirumavalavan's remarks on July 9 [3] have fueled speculation regarding a possible alliance between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and actor Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The VCK leader said that Tamil Nadu needs greater political maturity and a broader opposition front to counter the BJP [2].
While the TVK currently has zero members of parliament [1], its influence is growing among regional allies. The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has already exited the DMK-led secular progressive alliance after aligning with the TVK [5]. Other allies, including the MDMK, are also under scrutiny. The MDMK contested four seats on the DMK symbol during the April 23 elections and won two [4].
Amid the shifting landscape, some reports suggest the DMK may lose further allies to the TVK [2]. However, Thirumavalavan clarified the status of his own party's ties. He said the VCK has not "officially" severed its alliance with the DMK [3].
The tension between state-level competition and national cooperation remains a central theme. The VCK chief's vision allows parties to compete for local governance while forming a unified front in New Delhi, a strategy intended to maximize the impact of regional voices on a national scale [1, 4].
“Tamil Nadu needs greater political maturity and a broader opposition front to counter the BJP.”
The proposed distinction between state-level rivalry and national cooperation reflects a strategic attempt to prevent the fragmentation of the anti-BJP vote in Tamil Nadu. By decoupling local electoral battles from national alliances, regional parties like the VCK and TVK seek to maintain their unique identities and voter bases while gaining the collective leverage necessary to influence national policy.
