Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw virtually flagged off the new Bengaluru–Mumbai Express on May 17, 2024 [1].

The new service strengthens connectivity between Karnataka and Maharashtra, addressing long-standing transportation demands in South and North Karnataka as part of a broader infrastructure expansion [2, 4].

The bi-weekly train will operate between SMVT Bengaluru in Karnataka and LTT Mumbai in Maharashtra [1, 3]. Regular services are scheduled to begin on May 23, 2024, from Bengaluru, and on May 24, 2024, from Mumbai [1, 3].

During the event, Vaishnaw said the long-pending demands of South and North Karnataka are now being fulfilled [2]. He also indicated that a Vande Bharat sleeper service on the same route is likely to start soon [2, 4].

Tejasvi Surya, a BJP MP, said the new direct train comes nearly 30 years after the earlier service began in 1983 [3].

Vaishnaw said pending demands of South and North Karnataka are being met and that the Vande Bharat sleeper between Bengaluru and Mumbai is expected shortly [4].

The long-pending demands of South & North Karnataka are now being fulfilled.

The introduction of this bi-weekly service and the promise of a Vande Bharat sleeper train reflect a strategic push to modernize long-distance rail travel between two of India's primary economic hubs. By filling a gap in direct connectivity that has persisted since 1983, the Ministry of Railways is attempting to reduce travel friction for business and migrant populations moving between the tech hub of Bengaluru and the financial center of Mumbai.
