Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche testified Tuesday before a Senate Appropriations subcommittee regarding the Justice Department's new "Anti-Weaponization Fund."
The fund represents a significant shift in federal spending and legal priorities, as it aims to compensate individuals the administration believes were targeted by political prosecutions.
Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) questioned Blanche on the purpose and oversight of the initiative during the hearing on Capitol Hill. The fund is part of a settlement with former President Donald Trump to resolve a lawsuit concerning the leaking of his tax returns [1, 2]. According to the administration, the money is intended for Trump-aligned individuals perceived to have been harmed by previous U.S. Department of Justice actions [1, 2].
Lawmakers pressed Blanche on the eligibility requirements for recipients. During the proceedings, Blanche said, "I won’t rule out Trump ‘weaponization’ payouts to January 6 rioters who assaulted police" [3].
Discrepancies exist regarding the exact size of the fund. Some reports place the amount at $1.7 billion [2], while other sources cite $1.776 billion [4] or $1.8 billion [5].
The hearing highlighted a growing divide over the use of federal resources to address perceived political grievances. Collins and other subcommittee members sought clarity on how the Department of Justice will determine who qualifies for these payments, especially in cases involving violent crimes, without compromising the integrity of the legal system.
“I won’t rule out Trump ‘weaponization’ payouts to January 6 rioters who assaulted police.”
The establishment of the Anti-Weaponization Fund signals a precedent where federal settlements can lead to broad compensatory funds for political allies. By refusing to exclude individuals involved in the January 6 Capitol riot, the Justice Department is potentially redefining the boundary between political victimization and criminal liability, which may trigger further legal challenges regarding the use of taxpayer funds for such payouts.
