Guatemalan authorities declared a red alert this week after the Volcán de Fuego showed heightened eruptive activity, forcing residents to flee their homes.

The escalation poses a direct threat to thousands of people living on the volcano's slopes. Because the eruption can trigger pyroclastic flows and ash falls, the government has mobilized emergency services to prevent mass casualties in high-risk zones.
