Intense rainfall has disrupted normal life in Shimla and surrounding districts of Himachal Pradesh, causing widespread road blockages and landslides.
The extreme weather threatens regional connectivity and public safety, as continuous precipitation triggers flash-flood risks and shuts down essential infrastructure.
According to reports, more than 100 roads [1] have been blocked across the state. Landslides have buried vehicles and severed transport links in several areas. The disruptions extend to basic utilities, with residents reporting failures in both power and water supply.
Heavy showers have lashed multiple districts, including Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Sirmaur, and Solan. Specific areas of concern include Sanjauli, Bothwell Estate, and Pachhad in the Sirmaur district. In Pachhad, officials recorded 207 mm [3] of rainfall.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a five-day [5] orange alert for the region. This warning follows a period of continuous heavy rainfall over the past 36 hours [4] that heightened fears of landslides. The IMD said there is a moderate threat of flash floods across the affected districts.
Local authorities have responded to the deteriorating conditions by closing schools to ensure student safety. The weather system is linked to the active monsoon season, which frequently brings volatile conditions to the mountainous terrain of northern India.
Emergency crews are working to clear debris from the blocked highways, though ongoing rain continues to hamper recovery efforts. The IMD said it continues to monitor the region as the orange alert remains in effect.
