Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commissioned the INS Mahendragiri, the sixth and final stealth frigate of the Project 17A Nilgiri-class [1].
The induction of this vessel completes a major indigenous shipbuilding program designed to modernize India's naval fleet with network-centric combat capabilities.
The ceremony took place at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh [1], [2], [3]. While reports on the exact date vary between July 11 [2] and July 12, 2026 [1], the event marked the culmination of the Project 17A series.
Built as a stealth guided-missile frigate, the INS Mahendragiri is armed with BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles [2]. These vessels are designed to reduce radar cross-sections, making them harder for enemy sensors to detect while operating in contested waters.
Singh said Andhra Pradesh is a defence nerve-centre during the event [3]. He said the region is important in supporting the nation's maritime security and indigenous production goals.
The Project 17A ships utilize advanced network-centric warfare systems, allowing them to share real-time data with other naval assets. This connectivity ensures a coordinated response to threats across the Indian Ocean region.
By completing the six-ship series, the Indian Navy increases its capacity for multi-role operations, including anti-submarine warfare and surface-to-air defense, using domestically produced technology [1], [2].
