India's Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted the first flight test of Project Kusha, an indigenous long-range surface-to-air missile system.
The successful trial marks a strategic shift toward military self-reliance. By developing its own air-defense capabilities, India aims to reduce its operational dependence on the Russian-made S-400 system.
The test took place at APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha [1]. The project is designed to provide a tiered defense layer capable of intercepting various threats at different distances.
According to technical specifications, the system utilizes multiple interceptor variants. The M1 interceptor missile has a range of 150 km [2]. The M2 variant extends that reach to 250 km [2]. For long-range engagement, the M3 interceptor is designed to reach between 350 and 400 km [2].
This indigenous development is part of a broader effort to secure domestic airspace without relying on foreign suppliers for critical hardware and maintenance. The DRDO is focusing on creating a comprehensive shield that can integrate with existing radar and command networks.
