Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi urged India to continue its development work on the Chabahar port during a visit to Delhi [1].

The project represents a critical strategic link for India, providing a maritime route to Central Asia, the Caucasus, and Europe while bypassing traditional regional bottlenecks.

Speaking on Sept. 1, 2023 [1], Araghchi said the port is a vital instrument for bilateral relations. "The Chabahar port is one of the symbols of cooperation between Iran and India," Araghchi said [2].

Tehran is encouraging New Delhi to maintain its investments and infrastructure work despite the pressure of U.S. sanctions on Iran [3]. The Iranian minister said the port serves as a strategic asset that allows India to expand its geopolitical footprint. "Chabahar will be like a golden gate for India to access Central Asia, the Caucasus and then Europe," Araghchi said [4].

The development of the port is intended to deepen cooperation between the two nations and secure a stable trade corridor. Araghchi said India can play a constructive role in the region through continued investment in Chabahar [5].

By utilizing the port, India seeks to establish a reliable trade route that reduces dependence on other regional powers. The project remains a focal point of Iran's strategy to integrate with South Asian markets, a move that aligns with India's goals for regional connectivity and economic expansion.

"The Chabahar port is one of the symbols of cooperation between Iran and India."

The push for continued investment in Chabahar highlights the tension between India's strategic autonomy and U.S. sanctions. By securing a direct route to Central Asia, India reduces its reliance on Pakistani territory for trade, while Iran gains a critical economic lifeline and a stronger partnership with a major Asian power.
