Japan's Oceanographic Research and Development Agency (JAMSTEC) found heavy rare-earth elements in seabed mud collected off Minamitorishima [1].
This discovery is a critical step in Japan's effort to diversify its supply chain for materials essential to high-tech electronics. Currently, China controls approximately 90% [1] of global rare-earth production, leaving other nations vulnerable to trade disruptions.
The samples were retrieved in early February 2026 [2] by the research vessel Chikyū. The sampling site is located roughly 1,900 km [3] south of central Tokyo, where the vessel drilled into the seabed at a depth of approximately 6,000 meters [1].
Analysis of the mud confirmed the presence of yttrium and other heavy rare-earth elements [1]. The project involved coordination between JAMSTEC and the Cabinet Office. Detailed analysis results are expected to be published soon [1].
While the presence of these minerals is confirmed, the economic feasibility of extracting them from such extreme depths remains unproven. To address this, the agency has planned a pilot test for February 2027 [1] to determine if commercial recovery is viable.
