Japanese menswear retailer Yofuku no Aoyama has launched a mosquito-repellent parka that is selling at more than 1.5 times the forecasted volume [1].
The surge in demand comes as experts report a significant increase in mosquito populations across Japan, extending the risk period for bites into late autumn.
The garment is described as a "wear-able mosquito repellent" and features fabric treated with specialized chemicals [1]. Kawaguchi Hotaka, senior store manager at the Yofuku no Aoyama Shinbashi Karimori store, said the parka is designed to be stretchable, washable, and breathable [1].
This product launch coincides with a spike in insect activity. Dr. Kazumasa Ogino, an associate professor at Industrial Medicine University and part-time lecturer at Sankyo Disinfection Co., said the mosquito population is clearly higher than the previous year. He said that the volume is approximately 20 percent higher [1].
Dr. Ogino said that current climate conditions are extending the season. He said mosquitoes will certainly be present through late October, and depending on the conditions, they may appear until early November [1].
The environmental pressure is evident in urban areas. Maruyama Kiyoshi, a manager at ANNnewsCH, described the conditions under bridges as becoming like jungles where mosquitoes are plentiful [1]. He said that without applying repellent chemicals, one would be bitten instantly [1].
The retailer's entry into the functional clothing market reflects a broader trend of integrating public health protections into everyday apparel to combat the effects of changing seasonal patterns.
