Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan said he will meet the Law Society to discuss a dispute over a new legal aid payments system.
The conflict threatens the functionality of the Irish criminal justice system, as solicitors argue the new payment structure is unsustainable and causes widespread disruption in the courts.
O'Callaghan announced his willingness to engage with the legal body on Thursday morning after receiving a request for a meeting the previous night. "I have no difficulty meeting the Law Society," O'Callaghan said.
Despite the agreement to talk, the minister has maintained a firm stance on the policy changes. He said that he will not reverse the legal aid changes despite the ongoing actions taken by solicitors. O'Callaghan also criticized the existing framework, stating, "The criminal legal aid system is being misused."
In response to the dispute, solicitors have announced a targeted withdrawal of services. A spokesperson for the solicitors said the group will shut down district court legal aid work at the Criminal Courts of Justice for two days this week [1] and three days next week [1].
This coordinated action results in a total shutdown period of five days [1]. The disruption is intended to pressure the government into revising the payment system, which solicitors claim is failing to provide adequate compensation for their work.
The government continues to argue that the reforms are necessary to ensure the system is not exploited, while legal professionals warn that the current instability could delay criminal proceedings and impact the right to a fair trial.
