Noida International Airport launched its first commercial flight to Lucknow on Monday, carrying local farmers as special guests on the inaugural journey.
The event marks the transition of the Jewar project from construction to active operations, signaling a significant expansion of aviation infrastructure in Uttar Pradesh. By including the landowners on the first flight, the government sought to acknowledge the local community's role in the project's completion.
Union Aviation Minister and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath attended the ceremony. The Union Aviation Minister flagged off the aircraft, which transported the farmers from the airport in Jewar to the state capital in Lucknow [1], [2]. Upon arrival, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath met with the passengers to recognize their contribution to the state's infrastructure [1], [3].
The project involved the acquisition of significant tracts of agricultural land to make way for the runways and terminals. Reports indicate that the farmers who participated in the flight had previously surrendered 3,300 acres of cultivated land [2].
This inaugural flight serves as a symbolic gesture to resolve potential tensions between the state and the displaced agrarian community. The presence of the Union Aviation Minister underscores the federal government's support for the airport, which is designed to alleviate pressure on existing hubs in the National Capital Region [4].
Officials said the event celebrated a landmark contribution by the farmers [4]. The flight to Lucknow represents the start of regular commercial operations at the site, which is expected to transform the regional economy by increasing connectivity, and attracting investment to the Jewar area [1], [3].
“The inaugural flight to Lucknow carried farmers who surrendered land for the development of the Jewar airport project.”
The commencement of commercial flights at Noida International Airport reduces the aviation burden on Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport. By prioritizing the inclusion of displaced farmers in the inaugural ceremony, the Uttar Pradesh government is attempting to mitigate long-standing land acquisition grievances through public recognition and symbolic inclusion in the project's success.
