Russia launched a large-scale daytime drone barrage across Ukraine on Wednesday, targeting Kyiv and the Dnipropetrovsk region.
The escalation marks a shift toward intensified daylight bombing and suggests a strategic attempt to influence international diplomatic timing.
Reports on the scale of the attack vary. One source said at least 800 drones were launched [1], while other reports placed the number at over 200 [2]. The first wave of drones arrived shortly after 11:00 [3].
Casualty figures also differ across reports. The Kyiv Independent reported at least 14 people died [4], while other sources cited at least six [1] or at least four deaths [5]. More than 80 people were injured [4].
President Volodymyr Zelensky said the timing of the strikes was not accidental. He linked the barrage to the diplomatic movements of the United States.
"These attacks were deliberately carried out on the day US President Donald Trump arrived in China," Zelensky said [1].
Ukrainian officials said that the use of Shahed drones in such high volumes during daylight hours complicates defense efforts. The strikes hit multiple cities, disrupting infrastructure, and causing civilian casualties across the country.
“"These attacks were deliberately carried out on the day US President Donald Trump arrived in China."”
The coordination of military strikes with high-profile diplomatic events, such as a U.S. president's visit to China, suggests Russia is using tactical aggression to signal political leverage. By shifting to massive daytime barrages, the Russian military is testing Ukrainian air defenses under higher visibility and increasing the psychological pressure on civilian populations.
