The Japanese government will hold a completion ceremony for the restored Shuri Castle Main Hall on Nov. 22, 2026 [3].
The restoration marks the return of a primary symbol of Okinawan identity and Japanese heritage after a devastating fire destroyed the structure in 2019 [1]. The project represents a significant cultural recovery effort for the city of Naha.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Kihara announced the date for the ceremony, which will take place within the Shuri Castle Park [3]. Kihara said the event is designed to demonstrate to the public that the reconstruction of the Main Hall is complete and to ensure the site is preserved as a source of pride for both Okinawa and Japan.
"Shuri Castle is an extremely important building that can be called the pride of not only the people of Okinawa but also our country," Kihara said. He said the government will continue to work as one to advance the restoration efforts.
The original structure was lost during a fire in 2019 [1]. Following the disaster, the government initiated the formal reconstruction process in 2022 [2]. The multi-year project involved meticulous efforts to recreate the architectural details of the royal palace.
The upcoming ceremony on Nov. 22 [3] will serve as the official unveiling of the restored hall. This milestone concludes the primary phase of rebuilding the heart of the castle complex, which has been a focal point of local and national attention since the blaze.

The completion of the Shuri Castle Main Hall signifies the end of a high-profile recovery period that began after the 2019 fire. By scheduling a formal ceremony for November 2026, the Japanese government is transitioning the site from a construction zone back into a functional cultural landmark, reinforcing the link between regional Okinawan identity and national Japanese heritage.
