SpaceX and the Australian federal government have recovered a Starship test vehicle from the Indian Ocean near Christmas Island [1, 2].
The retrieval of the hardware allows engineers to inspect the vehicle for damage and analyze performance data to improve future iterations of the rocket. Because SpaceX aims for full reusability, recovering spent test vehicles is a critical part of the development cycle [3, 4].
The vehicle, identified as Ship 40, had spent 24 days [2] adrift in the ocean following a test flight launched from Texas. The rocket intentionally splashed down in the water as part of its mission profile [3, 4].
Recovery teams located the 52-meter [5] vessel in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Western Australia. The recovery took place near Christmas Island, which is located about 1,500 kilometers [5] northwest of the Western Australia mainland.
Australian authorities coordinated with the aerospace company to ensure the vessel was safely towed to the island. The operation concluded on Wednesday, Aug. 19 [1, 2].

The successful recovery of Ship 40 demonstrates the logistical capability to retrieve massive aerospace hardware from remote maritime regions.
