Tamil Nadu Congress chief Manickam Tagore said the party's primary goal is to make Rahul Gandhi Prime Minister in the 2029 [1] elections.
This public pledge signals a strategic effort by the Congress party to establish a clear leadership alternative to the current administration ahead of the next general election cycle. By naming a specific candidate and timeline, the party aims to consolidate opposition support, and define its long-term national ambition.
Speaking in Chennai, Tagore said, "Our singular focus is to install Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi as Prime Minister in the 2029 [1] Lok Sabha elections."
BJP leaders responded with criticism of the Congress party's history and current ambitions. During a visit to Surat, Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi (BJP) addressed those critical of his government's self-reliance initiatives. Modi said, "Pessimists who mock Atmanirbhar Bharat kept India dependent" [2].
The Prime Minister continued his critique of the opposition during a national NDA conclave in New Delhi. He characterized the previous administration's tenure as a period of failure. Modi said that Congress led India to a state of hopelessness through its misrule [3].
These exchanges highlight the deepening divide between the ruling coalition and the opposition. While the Congress party focuses on the prospective leadership of Rahul Gandhi, the BJP continues to emphasize the achievements of the current government's 12 years [3] in office to maintain its electoral dominance.
“Our singular focus is to install Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi as Prime Minister in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.”
The explicit naming of Rahul Gandhi as the target for the 2029 premiership suggests the Congress party is attempting to move past internal leadership ambiguity to present a unified front. Conversely, the BJP's response focuses on historical contrast, attempting to frame the Congress party as a source of instability and 'hopelessness' compared to the current administration's tenure of 12 years.
