Takahiro Yasuno, leader of Team Mirai, detailed his party's vision for updating Japanese politics through AI and fiscal reform in a recent interview [1].
As a newer political force, Team Mirai's positions signal a shift toward data-driven governance and a departure from traditional tax debates that have long deadlocked the Diet.
Yasuno addressed the current state of the stalled Diet and the ongoing debate over consumption tax reductions. He argued that the focus of the government should shift away from tax cuts. "What is needed now is not a reduction in consumption tax, but a reduction in social insurance premiums," Yasuno said [3].
The party leader also discussed a proposed secondary-capital bill, which aims to redistribute administrative functions away from Tokyo. This initiative forms part of a broader strategy to modernize the country's infrastructure and governance [1].
Regarding technology, Yasuno evaluated the status of AI reform and the challenges of integrating these tools into the political process. He previously noted that the era of "pastoral AI development" had ended [4]. This shift is underscored by recent industry volatility, including the suspension of Anthropic’s AI models Mythos 5 and Fable 5 [5].
To bridge the gap between technology and legislation, Yasuno has held AI study sessions. Approximately 20 parliamentarians attended one such session to explore how AI should be utilized in governance [6].
Team Mirai was founded in 2025 [7]. Since its inception, the party has secured 11 seats in the lower-house election and one seat in the 2026 upper-house election [7]. Yasuno continues to advocate for a vision where AI streamlines the legislative process and increases transparency in the halls of power [2].
“What is needed now is not a reduction in consumption tax, but a reduction in social insurance premiums”
The emergence of Team Mirai represents a niche but growing movement to treat governance as a technical problem solvable through AI and systemic fiscal restructuring. By prioritizing social insurance premiums over consumption taxes, Yasuno is attempting to pivot the national economic conversation toward a different form of relief for citizens while leveraging his background in technology to disrupt the traditional legislative culture of the Diet.
