Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi attended the Okinawa All-War Deaders Memorial Service on Tuesday to honor those killed during World War II [1].
The appearance signals the administration's continued focus on the delicate balance between national security and the long-standing grievances of Okinawa residents regarding the presence of foreign military installations.
During the ceremony, Takaichi acknowledged the immense loss of life in the region, noting that more than 200,000 people died during the Battle of Okinawa [1]. She specifically recognized the 95 individuals whose names were newly inscribed on the memorial this year [1].
In her address, the Prime Minister emphasized a commitment to ensuring that the tragedies of war are never repeated. "Our country has moved forward as a nation that values peace, under the resolute vow that 'the horrors of war shall never be repeated,'" Takaichi said [1]. She said that she would continue efforts to realize a world where all Japanese people can live in peace and spiritual abundance.
Takaichi also addressed the structural burdens placed on the prefecture. She spoke to the resilience of the local population, saying, "I am mindful, as Prime Minister, of the strength that the people of Okinawa have cultivated by overcoming hardships and weaving together hope" [1].
Beyond the commemorative tributes, Takaichi advocated for the reorganization, integration, and reduction of U.S. military bases in Japan [1]. This call for downsizing reflects a recurring point of tension between the central government in Tokyo and the local Okinawan administration, which has long sought a significant decrease in the U.S. military footprint on the island.
The Prime Minister concluded her remarks by pledging constant effort toward a peaceful and prosperous society [1].
“"the horrors of war shall never be repeated,"”
Takaichi's public commitment to reducing US base presence is a strategic attempt to align the central government with Okinawan public sentiment. While Japan remains a key US ally, the persistent local opposition to base expansion makes the 'reorganization and reduction' rhetoric a necessary political tool for maintaining domestic stability in the prefecture.
