The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) proposed reserving 33% [1] of its candidate tickets for women in the 2029 [2] Lok Sabha elections.
This move represents a significant shift in the party's internal candidate selection process to align with national goals for gender parity in governance. By formalizing a quota, the party aims to transition from symbolic representation to a systemic increase of women in legislative roles.
The proposal was introduced Wednesday during the first day of the TDP Mahanadu annual conclave held in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. The initiative is intended to further empower women and reflect the party's long-standing commitment to gender equality.
Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Anitha said the move was historic. She said the decision would empower women and provide them with a direct path into national politics.
The party's decision coincides with its support for the national women’s quota law and the Modi government's push for delimitation. Party leadership said that the national law has awakened the power of every woman, providing the momentum for the TDP to implement its own internal reservation policy.
The 33% [1] reservation specifically targets the 2029 [2] electoral cycle. This ensures that one-third of the party's nominations for the lower house of Parliament are held by women, regardless of the constituency's previous demographics.

The TDP's proposal signals a strategic effort to institutionalize women's leadership within the party structure ahead of the 2029 elections. By adopting a fixed percentage, the party is moving toward a model of mandatory representation that mirrors the broader legislative goals of the Indian government's women's quota law, potentially forcing a shift in local political dynamics in Andhra Pradesh.
