Police arrested Toru Matsushima, a 65-year-old [1] tennis school coach, on suspicion of sexually assaulting a female acquaintance.
The case highlights the legal proceedings surrounding non-consensual sexual acts and the investigation of private residences in Chiba Prefecture.
According to investigators, the incident occurred between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. on May 8, 2026 [2]. The assault took place at the residence of the suspect in Nakasato, Shirako Town, Chiba Prefecture [2]. The victim is identified as a company employee residing in Ibaraki Prefecture [1].
Authorities arrested Matsushima later this month after determining that he likely engaged in sexual acts without the victim's consent [2]. The investigation focused on the timeline of the evening and the nature of the interaction between the two acquaintances.
When questioned by police, Matsushima denied the allegations of coercion. "There is no mistake that sexual intercourse took place, but I have never invited [someone] to have sexual intercourse," Matsushima said [1].
The suspect continues to be held as police finalize the details of the case. Investigators are reviewing evidence from the home in Shirako Town to determine if the encounter was forced, a key component of the sexual assault charges under Japanese law.
“"There is no mistake that sexual intercourse took place, but I have never invited [someone] to have sexual intercourse,"”
This case underscores the strict application of sexual assault laws in Japan, where the distinction between consensual and non-consensual acts is central to criminal prosecution. The suspect's admission that sexual activity occurred, while denying the initiation or coercion, places the burden of proof on the evidence of consent and the victim's testimony.
