Tesla launched the Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel-Drive (RWD) in India on Friday with a starting price of ₹50.89 lakh [1].
The move represents a strategic effort to expand the company's product portfolio in the Indian market by offering a more accessible entry point for electric vehicle buyers.
This new variant is priced nearly ₹9 lakh lower than the previous entry price [7]. It is also ₹11.1 lakh cheaper than the long-wheel-base version of the vehicle [8]. To further lower the barrier to entry, Tesla is offering financing options that include a down payment of ₹6,00,000 [3], and monthly installments starting at ₹39,990 [2].
In terms of performance, the Model Y Premium RWD features a WLTP range of up to 500 km [4]. The vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds [5].
Tesla said that deliveries for the new model are slated to begin in July 2026 [6].
“Tesla launched the Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel-Drive (RWD) in India on Friday with a starting price of ₹50.89 lakh.”
Tesla's price reduction and the introduction of a Rear-Wheel-Drive variant suggest a shift toward capturing a broader segment of the Indian luxury EV market. By lowering the entry cost and providing structured financing, the company is attempting to challenge local and international competitors in a region where high import duties and infrastructure gaps have historically limited EV adoption.
