Swapan Dasgupta, a BJP minister in West Bengal, warned his party against accepting defectors from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) following the 2026 state elections [1].
This internal caution comes as the BJP establishes a new government in West Bengal, marking a significant shift in the region's political power structure.
In his first interview since becoming a minister, Dasgupta discussed the challenges of governance and the intended reconstruction of the state. He described the current state of the opposition as one of turmoil. "The TMC is imploding, and I am very happy about it," Dasgupta said.
Despite the opposition's struggles, Dasgupta urged the BJP to maintain its ideological purity. He cautioned that the party should not dilute its principles by welcoming disgruntled leaders who are fleeing the TMC. "Beware of false friends," Dasgupta said.
Meanwhile, the TMC continues to grapple with internal revolt and leadership disputes following its 2026 poll defeat [1]. Abhishek Banerjee, the TMC national general secretary, has faced allegations of intimidation and has been involved in a row over post-poll violence.
Banerjee has challenged the legitimacy of the government's victory. On May 9, 2026, he questioned the credibility of the electoral process and accused the Election Commission of acting in a partisan manner [2]. "The Election Commission is acting in a partisan manner," Banerjee said.
Dasgupta's comments suggest that the BJP intends to build its new administration on a foundation of its own core supporters rather than relying on opportunistic alliances with former rivals. The tension between the new administration and the TMC leadership reflects a deeply polarized political environment in West Bengal.
“"The TMC is imploding, and I am very happy about it."”
The BJP's refusal to integrate TMC defectors indicates a strategic shift toward long-term ideological consolidation rather than short-term numerical dominance. By prioritizing party purity over the absorption of opposition remnants, the BJP is attempting to establish a distinct governance identity in West Bengal, while the TMC's internal fragmentation and challenges to the electoral process suggest a period of prolonged instability for the opposition.
