Babul Supriyo, a Rajya Sabha MP of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), posted a cryptic message Wednesday, June 5, 2024, to address speculation about his political stance.
The statement comes as the TMC faces internal instability following a heavy defeat in the April-May 2024 West Bengal election and a series of high-profile defections.
Supriyo initially posted the phrase “I am where I am” before later clarifying his position. He said, “I am exactly where I am.”
The comments follow a period of significant friction between the party leadership, led by Mamata Banerjee, and rebel legislators. Other figures associated with the internal unrest include Satabdi Roy and Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar.
The party has struggled to maintain its ranks after the West Bengal assembly election, where the TMC won 80 seats [1] out of a total of 294 [2]. This electoral downturn has coincided with a wave of senior members leaving the organization.
Data indicates that 20 TMC MPs [3] have left the party, leaving only eight of the original 28 MPs [4] who served before the defections began.
Supriyo's refusal to explicitly announce a departure or a change in allegiance serves to quell rumors about his own loyalty during this transition. The tension within the party has grown as the leadership attempts to manage the fallout from the assembly losses and the subsequent exodus of lawmakers.
“I am exactly where I am.”
The instability within the Trinamool Congress suggests a deeper crisis of confidence following the 2024 electoral losses. By maintaining a cryptic but firm stance on his current position, Supriyo is navigating a volatile environment where the party's parliamentary strength has been severely diminished by the departure of nearly 71% of its MP cohort.
