The city of Barranquilla is modernizing the Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez to increase its spectator capacity to 65,000 [2].
This expansion aims to bring the venue up to international standards, allowing the city to compete with the modern sporting facilities found in Bogotá and Medellín. By upgrading the infrastructure, the city intends to create a world-class venue capable of hosting larger crowds and higher-profile events.
The project, led by Mayor Alejandro Char, involves a comprehensive overhaul of the stadium's physical structure. The current capacity of 43,000 spectators [1] will be expanded through the installation of new seating and updated grandstands. As part of the aesthetic and technological upgrade, the stadium will feature a new LED facade containing more than 74,000 light bulbs [2].
Financial reports on the project vary by source. The Mayor's office announced an investment of 180 billion Colombian pesos [4], while other reports indicate the contract awarded to the Metro Estadio consortium exceeds U.S.$45 million [5].
Construction of the modernization process began in 2024 [1]. The city expects the renovated stadium to be completed by the middle of the second half of 2025 [1].
