Colombia's National Directorate of Taxes and Customs, known as the DIAN, has opened the 2026 income tax filing process for millions of citizens.
This filing cycle is critical for the national treasury as the government seeks to collect an estimated $6.1 trillion [2] for the 2026 taxable year. The process ensures the state can fund public services and infrastructure through verified individual contributions.
The filing period began on Aug. 1, 2026 [3]. While some reports suggest an earlier cutoff, the majority of official guidance indicates the process will close on Oct. 31, 2026 [4] to avoid penalties.
Approximately seven million natural persons are expected to file taxes this year [1]. Eligibility is based on specific income and asset thresholds. A tax analyst from El Colombiano said that individuals with incomes exceeding 50 legal monthly minimum wages are obligated to declare [5].
"The DIAN confirmed that around 7 million natural persons must present the income tax return for the 2026 taxable year," a DIAN spokesperson said [1].
Citizens can complete their obligations through the DIAN's virtual platform, official website, or at physical offices. The agency emphasizes the importance of gathering all necessary documentation before the deadline to prevent errors that could lead to sanctions.
"The 2026 income tax declaration process will open on August 1 and close on October 31, the deadline to avoid sanctions," a DIAN Director of Operations said [4].
Taxpayers are encouraged to review their financial records from the previous year to ensure all assets and income streams are accurately reported. The DIAN provides digital tools to help citizens determine if they meet the mandatory filing criteria based on their 2026 earnings.
“Approximately 7 million natural persons are expected to file taxes this year.”
The 2026 filing cycle represents a significant revenue drive for the Colombian government, targeting a massive $6.1 trillion collection. By casting a wide net of 7 million taxpayers and utilizing a strict three-month window, the DIAN is leveraging digital platforms to increase compliance and reduce the tax gap for the 2026 taxable year.
