India's Defence Ministry may clear military procurement proposals worth more than Rs 1 lakh crore [1] this Thursday.

The move signals a significant escalation in India's efforts to modernize its armed forces and enhance national security through high-tech acquisitions.

Among the primary targets for acquisition are 300 K-9 Vajra howitzers [1] and 600 HAMMER missiles [1]. These assets are intended to strengthen the operational readiness of the military across various terrains. The scale of this potential approval follows previous procurement drives where the ministry cleared equipment worth Rs 50,000 crore [2] and separate acquisitions exceeding Rs 52,000 crore [3].

An official said the ministry has greenlit significant acquisitions exceeding Rs 52,000 crore, bolstering national security [3]. These previous steps laid the groundwork for the current modernization drive, which focuses on filling critical gaps in artillery and precision strike capabilities.

In addition to the heavy artillery and missiles, the ministry has looked toward enhancing air defense. A spokesperson said the Army will also bolster its air defence with Russian Verba systems [1]. This diversification of equipment sources remains a central part of the procurement strategy.

The current proposals represent a massive financial commitment to the military infrastructure. By securing these systems, the ministry aims to ensure that the armed forces can respond to evolving regional threats with modernized hardware and improved firepower.

The Defence Ministry may clear proposals worth over Rs 1 lakh crore.

This procurement surge indicates a strategic shift toward rapid modernization of India's land and air defense systems. By focusing on high-volume acquisitions of howitzers and precision missiles, India is prioritizing the reinforcement of its borders and the ability to project power in contested environments.
