The Indian government is implementing E20 fuel, a petrol blend containing 20% ethanol [1], to reduce carbon emissions and increase renewable energy use.
The transition is critical because it affects millions of vehicle owners, particularly those with older BS-III engines, who fear the higher ethanol content may corrode rubber parts or damage engines.
Automotive manufacturers have moved to reassure the public. A Mercedes-Benz spokesperson said, "Our cars are materially compatible with ethanol blending."
Academic research supports the industry's stance. Mechanical engineers from IIT Kanpur said E20 petrol does not harm vehicle engines.
Despite these assurances, some users report immediate problems. Nitin Ahlawat, an entrepreneur and brand-marketing consultant, said, "My car has refused to run on E20."
This discrepancy between official reports and user experience has created significant anxiety among drivers. A survey indicates that approximately five in 10 vehicle owners are likely to seek legal recourse if E20 causes damage to their cars [2].
The government's push for ethanol blending aims to lower the nation's reliance on imported crude oil. However, the conflict between researcher findings and individual owner reports suggests a gap in how different vehicle models, especially older ones, react to the blend.
While high-end brands like BMW and Mercedes-Benz have signaled compatibility, the broader impact on the diverse Indian automotive fleet remains a point of contention.
